There are only two paths available for the future of food and farming, and both are already being built.

One follows diversity, the law of return and the commons. The other follows extraction, enclosure and consolidation. The movement working on the first path is often described as an alternative — but on the evidence, it is the system that actually feeds most of the world, while the second is the one that requires constant new frontiers to survive.

The first path: three principles that cannot be worked against

Everything gathered under the banners of organic, permaculture, biodynamic, natural farming and agroecology shares three non-negotiable principles.

1. Diversity

Nature does not work by sameness, uniformity or monoculture. It evolves constantly toward diversity of expression. A single wild grass, Oryza sativa, became rice — and in India alone, peasant farmers bred it into some 200,000 varieties. Corn-growing cultures in the Americas produced a thousand varieties of their own.

Colonization stunts that evolution, or imagines it can. Herbicide-tolerant crops are the standing proof of failure: the attempt to shut evolution down produced superweeds resistant to the herbicide they were engineered around. No amount of engineering closes evolution off.

There is a warning built into the history of the technology itself. When recombinant DNA first made it possible to move genes across species boundaries, the scientists who developed those techniques called for a moratorium at a conference in Asilomar, California — their reasoning being that they knew how to do it but not what it would do. The scientists called for the pause. Commercial development ran ahead anyway.

The quarter-century that followed has seen collapsing monarch butterfly populations, and farmer suicide rates well above national averages in India, the United States, Australia and Europe. That a food system can reduce the people who produce food to that degree of distress is the clearest available indictment of it.

2. The law of return

The modern organic movement has an origin most organic farmers do not know.

In 1905 an imperial economic botanist was sent from Britain to India. The discipline was not called agriculture — it was economic botany, the science of extracting money from agricultural commodities. He arrived in Bihar, in the heartland of indigo cultivation. But in the areas where indigo was not grown, he found something that undermined the whole premise of his assignment: fertile soils and crops with no pest damage.

His conclusion was that he could do no better than take the peasant and the pest as his teachers. The book he wrote from that study, An Agricultural Testament, became the foundation text of the modern organic movement.

Its central observation was that this farming was as perennial as a forest or an ocean, because of two things: diversity, and the constant act of giving back.

That is the law of return. In contemporary language it is the circular economy; in ecological terms it is the maintenance of the nutrient and water cycles. Keep those two cycles intact and the system holds. Climate change itself can be read as a rupture of the nutrient cycle — the shift to an economy that takes without giving, made possible when fossil fuels arrived to power it.

3. The commons

The third principle is that the earth’s gifts are shared. Seed is a commons. So are land, water, air, knowledge, food, nourishment — and democracy itself.

Reclaiming the commons matters precisely because enclosure and privatization are the mechanism by which the other path advances. And memory is part of that defense: the struggle of people against power has always been the struggle of memory against forgetting. There is memory in the land, memory in the seed, memory in every cell of the body — and it survives displacement.

The second path: from commodity empire to code

The extractive path is not a recent development. It is a continuous story with recognisable stages.

The commodity empire. The first global empire was built on a single crop: cotton. It required land taken from indigenous peoples, people captured in Africa and enslaved in cotton fields, and colonised territories prevented from feeding themselves. Populations forced to grow dye and fibre for export starved while doing it. India — which had accounted for roughly a quarter of the world economy, and whose spices and textiles were the actual destination of Columbus’s voyage — lost tens of millions of people to famines under an extractive colonial economy.

The birth of the corporation. The corporation has not always existed. Trade and business are ancient, but they were historically accountable to communities and to the land. Unaccountable business with limited liability was created when a few hundred merchant adventurers obtained a royal charter to go and conquer. Where one wave of conquest carried religion as its civilizing mission, this one carried a newer faith: the making of money. The capacity to loot was treated as the right to loot.

Fossil fuels. Land and forced labour alone were not sufficient. It was coal and the internal combustion engine — displacing hand spinning and hand weaving — that made global takeover possible, and that installed an appetite with no reciprocal obligation.

Industrial chemistry. Fossil fuels led to synthetic chemicals, and the chemical cartels of the twentieth century led directly into the machinery of extermination. Those companies were tried at Nuremberg; modern human rights law emerged from those trials. The connection between today’s agrochemical giants and that history is almost entirely forgotten.

Rent collection, then and now. Under colonial rule, the rent was extracted on land. Communities that had held customary, collective and non-tradeable rights to land they worked were suddenly required to pay rent on it. That is what manufactured poverty, starvation and famine — most starkly in a famine where there was no shortage of rice at all, only rice extracted as tax while trade volumes rose. The movements that answered it — women declaring they would give their lives before their grain, and the wider independence movement that told the empire to quit — are the template for what is needed now.

Today the rent is collected on money and on minds. A handful of billionaires hold as much wealth as half of humanity, and almost none of it comes from work. Social platforms extract and sell data from the messages people exchange — to companies that want to sell them things, and to political operations that want to sell them candidates.

Bio nullius: the enclosure of life

When land was colonized, the enabling legal fiction was terra nullius — the doctrine that the land was empty, and that its inhabitants were not people but impediments to progress.

The parallel doctrine now applied to living systems is bio nullius: the declaration that life is empty, that seed is empty, that indigenous knowledge is not knowledge and can therefore be pirated and patented.

This is the logic behind biopiracy — patents claimed over neem, basmati and wheat, and over more than a thousand climate-resilient traits derived from farmer-saved seed. Farming communities bred those seeds to tolerate salt, flood and drought over generations. What patenting adds is genomic mapping and guesswork about which stretch of the genome carries the trait. No breeding, no care, no knowledge — and then ownership.

The stated ambition in the late 1980s was five companies controlling food and health by the turn of the century. What actually consolidated was a cartel of four, after Bayer absorbed Monsanto, Dow merged with DuPont, and ChemChina took Syngenta. The business model that results is worth stating plainly: the herbicide causes cancer, and the same corporate group patents the cancer drugs. Tens of thousands of cancer claims have since been filed, with early losses on a scale comparable to the price of the acquisition itself.

Fake food, fake economics, fake knowledge

Three assaults are now aimed at the ecological food movement — and the movement is being targeted precisely because it works.

Fake food

From high-fructose corn syrup onward, food technology has largely been the business of manufacturing chemicals that fool the brain: making you believe you are tasting strawberry or vanilla when you are tasting neither.

Lab-engineered meat substitutes are that logic completed, and they are financed by the same venture capital and the same agrochemical companies that built the industrial system. The industry’s own framing is the giveaway. To produce at scale, these companies need efficient sources of amino acids and carbohydrates — not food — which points them straight back toward raw commodity crops that can be machine-tilled and machine-harvested.

In other words, fake food exists to sustain industrial agriculture, not to replace it. Note also the linguistic shift: not plants, but plant-based — extractions from plants rather than plants themselves. The same applies to cow-free dairy startups now attracting the same funding.

The most extreme version of this argument holds that the climate cannot be protected until the last farmer is gone, and that food should be manufactured by microbes in industrial vats. Framed as farm-free food for planetary rescue, it is in fact a form of eco-apartheid: separating people from nature, cultures from their land, and turning everyone into refugees on their own earth.

Fake economics

A useful rule of thumb: when you encounter the phrase “zero budget,” be suspicious. Zero-budget logic is cost externalization dressed as efficiency. It is the same accounting that treats teachers as costs and e-learning licences as progress, and it is now being financed at scale into agriculture by large investment funds — with the effect of linking the smallest farmers directly into global retail and platform supply chains.

The distribution numbers show why that matters. In industrialised production and distribution — big-box retail, e-commerce, supermarket chains — farmers typically receive between 1% and 4% of final value. Coffee is no exception. Only direct distribution creates a real chance at a fair price, and farmer networks that have built it report incomes many times higher than commodity growers.

The measurement itself needs replacing. Yield of nutritionally empty, chemically loaded commodities is the wrong yardstick. Health per acre and nutrition per acre is the right one — and by that measure, ecological systems can feed far more people than the land they occupy suggests.

Universal organic farming does not mean converting every industrial acre. Much of that land should never have been farmed. Rainforest should not be under soy. Prairie can return to prairie. If most food already comes from small farms, far less acreage is needed — and less acreage can be tended with far more care.

Then there are the externalities. Chemical farming in a single large agricultural economy has been assessed at over a trillion dollars a year in harm to farmers and environment alone. Add the health costs — cancers, diabetes, infertility, antibiotic resistance — and the shadow economy of industrial agriculture likely exceeds the formally counted one. The shadow is bigger than the thing casting it, and the shadow is profitable. Hence the case for true cost accounting and for living, circular economies.

Fake knowledge

The sales pitch has evolved through three generations. First: without chemicals we will starve. Then: without GMOs we will starve. Now: without big data we will starve.

But big data in agriculture is largely small information taken from farmers — surveyed off their land, aggregated, and sold back to them through their own smartphones as a new commodity. It is marketed as the new oil, which is more honest than intended.

The pattern of acquisition tells the story: climate data companies and soil data companies, built in Silicon Valley and bought by agrochemical firms. The stated appeal of farming without farmers is that removing farmers opens new markets for surveillance, robotics and artificial intelligence. The farmer’s own intelligence is treated as the obstacle.

Set against that is everything the term “artificial intelligence” quietly writes off: ecological intelligence, emotional intelligence, the cooperative intelligence of communities at work — and the intelligence in plants, in soil microbes, in the bacteria of the human gut. Life is intelligence. Machine learning is a narrow, mechanical subset of it being used to justify removing the rest.

There is a cultural version of this fight too. When voice assistants are contracted to teach schoolchildren what eating well means, the counter-proposal writes itself: children should learn food and farming from their mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers. Some farming schools have built exactly that into their curriculum, as grandmothers’ universities. As long as we can remember, we have power.

Why the small farm is the real food system

The case for scale runs opposite to the conventional one:

  • Around 80% of the world’s food comes from small farms, using roughly 25% of the land and resources.
  • The remaining fifth comes from giant farms that keep growing, become unmanageable, and then serve as the argument for further consolidation.
  • The great majority of industrial corn and soy goes to animal feed and biofuel — which arguably makes it not a food system at all.
  • “Intensive” industrial agriculture is intensive only in fossil fuels, chemicals and capital. The capital traps farmers in debt, and debt transfers land to the same investment firms that issued it. Land is not concentrating in the hands of landowners; it is concentrating in the hands of finance, which is in turn merging with biotech and with information technology.

If industrial agriculture were genuinely intensive, it would not need to keep invading new land or burning rainforest, and it would not need to turn farmers into refugees. The displacement is not incidental. Drought induced by unsustainable commodity production has dried lakes, emptied wells and desertified water-rich regions, and people leave when the water goes. Uprooting people from their homes has been the method since colonization began; the current refugee crisis is its latest expression.

Farming as healing: the climate argument

The largest available climate solution is also the simplest: return organic matter to the soil.

Long-term organic farm trials have recorded soil organic matter and soil nitrogen roughly doubling over two decades, while chemically farmed soils in the same period deplete. Given that chemical industrial farming accounts for something close to half the greenhouse gas problem, ecological agriculture and relocalized food systems are not a partial fix. They are a full solution — to climate breakdown, and to hunger and disease alongside it.

The window is narrow. A decade-long transition means keeping the movement’s diversity while making that diversity synergize, so it can meet consolidated finance and the agrochemical cartel as a single force.

A permanent stand for life

Non-cooperation with falsehood and violence has a name in the tradition of civil resistance: satyagraha, the force of truth. What the food movement is engaged in is a permanent satyagraha for life — for the land, for farmers, for communities, and for the gut microbiome where human health begins.

Because the governing system is not only chemical. It is an empire of falsehoods built to keep the chemicals in place: avoiding responsibility for harm, and overstating benefit.

Which points to a final reframe worth carrying. Farmers should perhaps stop describing themselves as producers of food at all. Food is a by-product of something larger: caring for the earth, regenerating the social health of communities through justice, and making children’s right to life real through the right to real food.

And real food can only come from real farms, real intelligence, real love and real giving.
